Warning: Don't Leave Anything!

I know I probably shouldn't share this story.  It makes me look bad, but I think you're all better off knowing.
I can't be trusted!

My husband's childhood friend, Troy, was passing through town with his family and crashed at our house for the night.

A few days later, I noticed something in our basement.

A blanket.

It was a little ratty.  Possibly a treasured baby blanket, but they didn't call looking for it.  Maybe it wasn't even theirs.  I was lazy.  I just didn't feel like mailing that blanket.  So, I didn't.

A couple weeks later we got something in the mail.   A small package from Troy's wife.  Inside was the tiniest barbie doll shirt.  They had accidentally taken it and wanted to return it.  Are you kidding me!?!  Who takes the time to mail a barbie shirt?

We surely wouldn't have missed that barbie shirt, but I guess that's what good people do.  Return things.

You'd think I would have finally mailed that blanket, right?  Only I didn't.  I intended to, but I kept procrastinating.   Then, I was sure they'd be coming back through town...anytime.

It's been about three years now.  We never used the blanket--too much guilt.

FINALLY, my husband and his friend were both visiting Boise at the same time this past weekend.  I wrote myself about five notes so I wouldn't forget it.  Sure, Troy's kids are practically grown and probably don't want the blanket anymore, but I was ready to be rid of my guilt.

I approached the wife with the blanket.  And a bonus, one of my children had smeared chocolate on it in the car.

She was gracious and laughed about it.  Yes, they're good people.   Though I'm not so sure they'll be visiting again.

Now I just need to take back this spoon.

My husband accidentally took it home from a Christmas church potluck in 2009.   It's a great spoon, but I don't use it either.  I just keep forgetting to take it to church.  I mean there have only been about 79 Sundays.

So, if you ever stop by and visit me, I'm warning you now.  Please don't leave anything!  Though, we may still snatch it from you at a potluck, while you're not watching.

Grumpy Grateful Mom Goal of the Week:  Return the spoon!

With 3 kids, I don't think I will ever travel "light' again. I try....but stuff still seems to fine it's way into the van, and then inevitably something gets left behind.
Do you think these items are trying to escape the chaos? LOL

Ugh! I can totally relate! I hate when people forget stuff and i have to find a place for it. Then I forget stuff and wish people would mail it, plus the guilt of realizing what goes around comes around, etc. And that we're never going to see that baby shoe ever again. Lol! Yeah, I can relate!

I'm the same way. I have an adorable pair of legwarmers that my niece left at our house 3 years ago. The legwarmers have been sitting on my dresser for 3 years. Sad.
Let us know if you ever return the spoon!

Hysterical! I am pretty good at returning items that are left at my house, I think in a timely manner.

I do have 2 items at friends house that I have actually been asking for back for about a year and they always forget or have another excuse. I suspect they are planning on keeping them ... one is a book (series, 8 books!!!) and another has a DVD. I want them back, go buy your own!

Okay, that was off subject ... slotted spoons are great, you should use it while you have it, if you dont' already have one :)

My sweetie and I went to the Melting Pot for my birthday last year. Somehow my cloth napkin got stuck in my coat sleeve and ended up coming home with us. It drove me crazy for a couple of weeks until I finally mailed back...anonymously of course.

That blanket does look like a special one, but if I had left one of my kids' lovies somewhere, I would be FRANTICALLY looking for it and possibly turning around and driving all the way back to get it! So...it couldn't have been that important. :)

And also? I'm terrible about returning things, too. Horrible.

I could have written this post! If it involves going to the post office it just ain't happening! Actually, post offices aren't even required. I have a pacifier from my friends baby (my kids have never used them and are too old anyway) and a pair of my nieces underwear that will fit my child when she's approximately 20. Think I'd make it a priority to return either? Nope.

So don't worry, I don't think less of you. :-)

So funny! I can totally relate. I have all these great intentions but I am awful at follow through. But at least you got it back to them.

I used to be horrendous at returning things I borrowed .... so I have these things I forgot to return from like 15 years ago, and every time I look at them I feel guilty because I don't know how to return them because I've lost touch with the owner so I'm just positive I'm going to H-E-double-hockey-sticks!

It's the guilt's fault. Without it lurking around I wouldn't think twice about returning items left. Possession is nine tenths of the law, right?

Oh my gosh - too funny! I laughed out loud at this. I actually did the same thing recently when we had friends from NYC staying with us. They left their Blackberry charger. I kept thinking that I should mail it back to them, but I'm sure it costs them about the same amount of money to buy a new one as it does for me to mail it. Ugh, now I feel bad, hah.

lol....I love how honest you are!!! I am so bad a mailing things. My MIL puts me to shame, she sends out thank you notes for someone sending her a thank you note!

I still leave things no matter how many lists I make and check. It happens.
I also try to return things but I seem to have an adversion to doing such a thing. Don't mean to but I keep forgetting.

Since it's confession time I had a friend visit onnce. She swore she left a book and a skirt here. I looked, I swore she didn't. A few months later I found said book and skirt. I did not return them. Perhaps that is where the friendship went bad? So good to know that I'm not alone. Lol!!! As always, you have me laughing so hard I barely

I love that you labeled this "stealing"! baahahahaha! The guilt you must feel over the spoon...maybe that should be on your "You might not want to be a Mormon" list! Don't worry, I don't think they'll excommunicate you for that! ;)

This cracked me up! I took a star wars figure from church when I was around 5 years old. No kidding - like 10 years later I had to return it when I found it again - I couldn't stand the thought! So you'll get the spoon back eventually!

Oh, I'm bad like that too. If somebody leaves something at my house, I never return it unless it's something that goes back to someone at church. Mail it? Nope. I either pitch it in Goodwill or use it. Whichever works out better for me. Horrible, right?
