My Brawling Bear Cubs

We went to Bear World last week.  There were these cubs just going at each other.  One cub was innocently hanging out, when the other cub decided to attack.  It was a brutal brawl.  Then, they hugged and made up.

I have my own cubs, otherwise know as Dani (7) and Evie (5).  OK, calling them cubs may be a stretch, but I didn't have a picture of squawking chickens!

They don't normally wrestle, but they have started going at each other, over the silliest things.  And, they are not so good at reconciling.  Yesterday morning's incomprehensible injustice?

"You're wearing my shorts!!!"

In my exasperated desperation I attempted a new strategy.  It was cruel.  I made them stay in their room (together!) until they made up, and encouraged them to clean up while they were there.  Hee hee.

I heard numerous shouts from Evie, "You are so mean!"

Then there was a well though out speech from Dani "You're just teaching me to send my children to their room for no good reason.  I'm going to do that and it will be your fault."

It took a good thirty minutes of tears, but someone finally broke.  Evie asked if she could make a present for Dani, out of tin foil.  And then, they were best friends, at least for an hour.

Then, "Move away!  You're sitting too close!"

I wasn't expecting miracles.

As a mom we take what we can get, and an hour is a blessed, blessed thing!

It's a good thing they made up and didn't kill each other instead! I'm actually all for making them work together. It brings them together really fast. Usually. Well, even if it doesn't, they accomplish something. Usually. OK, not all my theories work...

I had to laugh at this...it totally reminded me of my sister and I growing up! We were 19 months apart and had our own fair share of brawling bear cub moments (or again, more along the lines of squawking chickens! ;)) And yes, the days of, "You're so mean mom...." Thankfully my kids haven't thrown that out there YET, but I'm sure, with Manuel being 5 1/2, my day is coming! :)

Oh, siblings. :) My mom made us sing Love at Home and we thought that was cruel.

Loved the pictures up top. Sure does remind us of our "cubs". How nice that they can and are probably programed to eventually work it out. Sometimes it takes a while. Who said years? My 2 fighting cubs are now papa bears but can't wait to get together for their traditional dual on the tennis court.

Squawking chickens! That's perfect! I moved by 2 1/2 year old into her sister's room. At first, it was sweet and tender. But now the eight-year-old is getting fed up with hanging a toddler going through her stuff.

I do that very often. Make them sit by each other or do the room thing until they "love" each other again. It works!

Shutting them in their room together is a great idea!
My friend used to have to sit on the couch with her brother and hold hands until they made up and both apologized and hugged. Their mom was really consistent about this punishment for their bickering and it didn't take long to extinguish it... they learned to quickly solve their disagreements before the hand holding.

I used to do that too...with a twist. I made them sit knee to knee in a secluded room until they could be friends and come up with a compromise. Half the time the compromise was reached, half the time they were laughing hysterically at each other! Either way, they learned how to work the problem out. Now that they are older; they still talk about those little 'time outs' You are a wonderful referee, keep up the good work! ;)

That's a great idea! I used to use the room as punishment for my 7-year-old, you know, one step up from time out? She likes it too much - to be alone, away from everyone, reading. I had to go back to the corner. Oy.

Cracking up at it being your fault when your grandchildren get sent to their rooms someday.

Living in the same itty bitty house as my brother was punishment enough for me. And usually, being made to not say another word was torture too--he was mouthy and it's hard not mouthing off back at him!

I just love your Dani's speech!

In our house, it is not uncommon to hear fights like, "Stop looking out my window, only look out your window!" "Don't watch my show (on the big TV) while I'm watching it!" My middle daughter actually smacked her little brother in the face because he wouldn't stop singing the ABC song with her. I have yet to lock them in their room for fear social services would not believe it was the kids that beat each other up when they meet us in the ER. :)

My mom put my brother and I in the Arctic Entryway in the middle of winter. Needless to say, an unheated room in an Alaskan winter does wonders to stop the arguing!

Love the thought out speech about how you are teaching her to do it with her kids.

Can't expect miracles to last too long but at least they were getting along for a little while.

I can remember my mother doing that with my sisters and I. I guess we didn't kill each other because we are all still here!! Very funny post! I love how Dani had a well thought out response!! I love your family!!

When my boys were young i would separate them after one of their rows. A time out. Before long, they would somehow get together and it would be like nothing ever happen.
I guess it was the testosterone coursing throught their system that needed to be released.

This post had me laughing! My kids have been the same way lately. Today was our first day of mandatory rest time in their own rooms, and it seemed to help. A bit.

They learn psycho-babble at a really young age these days. I can remember my mom used to make us hug each other standing in the middle of the room while she went on about her business. Guess what happens when my kids fight? They have to hug each other in the middle of the room. I make them stay there until they stop saying "You stink" and "Its all your fault"

I guess that's one of the risks we're taking when we decide to have more than one child. Especially when they are so close in age. The joys I've got to look forward to in a few yrs!
The truth is that they really love each other no matter what :-)

Ha ha! Kids are hilarious. Right?
I sent my boys in to their room today with strict instructions to clean their room. Every few minutes one of them would come out crying about a new injury. Their room was spotless when I put them to bed but they goofed off, IN THE DARK, and now it's a mess again! Hilarious. Right?

I told Buddy this morning, "Y'know, if you're kind to your sisters and don't argue with them, you'll be more likely to NOT get assigned chores because I'll be sooo happy to hear that you're playing kindly with each other."

Sounds like great minds think alike :)

Which bear country did you go to? We are thinking of going to the one in SD but am just wondering if it's worth it... :) I know there is also one in Idaho, and possibly more? Not sure.
