The Mysterious Missing Beaver

I had a true best friend when I was young.
Beaver Cleaver.

He was a unique combination, half terrier and half miniature dachshund.  Very hyper, but gentle.

Poor Beaver had a rough time over his first 4th of July.  We left Beaver home alone during the day. When we got back, he was shaking, scared to death from the fireworks.   He had also nearly chewed and clawed through our wooden kitchen door.

Another time when the family left him home alone,  he ripped open some bags of potting soil and covered our back room with it.  My mom gave him a stern reprimand, "Beaver."  Beaver lowered his head and left the room.  We found him hiding under a blanket.

Beaver loved to escape.  He would race around our neighborhood, occasionally making some new dog  friends.  Still, no dog could ever compare to his true love, the kitchen rug.  I caught them "together" on several occasions.

Sadly, my dear friend made me sick.  After numerous emergency room trips with my Beaver-induced asthma, I know my parents didn't want to keep him around.    One day Beaver escaped again, just before a thunderstorm and never came back...or that's the story I was told.

I've always suspected foul play, but my parents vehemently deny any wrongdoing.

And on another random dog note,  we've had three different dog break-ins this year!   I think they must sense the plethora of crumbs under our kitchen table.  Dani and Mase are ecstatic with the visits, but my redhead, Evie, screams for her life whenever the smallest dog comes near.

Here was last Saturday's barking intruder.

Grumpy Mom Goal of the Day:  Clean up the crumbs.

Interesting. My pet rabbit "ran away".

My dad wouldn't tolerate pets! We were given a dog by a neighbor but it went to live at Grandma's house. It's kind of weird, because we had a farm...Dad just said he couldn't afford another mouth to feed.

Ran away. That's so sad. At least they said ran away, and not took him to a farm. LOL!
And what's with the dogs breaking in? How do they get in? Oh wait. Kids.
I have a few kiddos that run away for dear life when a dog comes up to them. It's gotten better now that we have a cat.

Do you still have reactions to dogs or is that something one grows out of? Funny you had three dogs break in! What are the odds?

I've never had a dog break in before. That must be quite interesting. Maybe you can get a different animal with a different kind of crumbs?

I've never had a dog break in before but there was a neighbor's dog that would wander around the neighborhood. It kind of freaked me out!

Oh goodness, I would be so sad if I had reactions to my dog. I bet that was so hard! And asthma is the worst. I had it when I was younger, now I am not as affected by it, only when I get sick and I have to use a nebulizer sometimes!

I love stories of childhood animals!!! We had a great poodle that our family just loved, she died when I was 23 and my dad had to leave work he was so sad. I'm not sure he ever left work early for anything before!! I have to say, it totally creeps me out that you had dog break ins, I know this is going to sound nuts, but I have a recurring "dream" that animals just keep comming into my house! But, then again, I do have three children!!!! Thanks for another great post!!

Sounds like a great dog. We had a chihuahua come in and lick our kittens yesterday.

Your story reminds me of what happened to our neighbor. One night he heard yapping in his kitchen and saw what he thought was his dog trying to jump up onto the counter. After yelling at the dog to stop, he finally realized that the dog wasn't his! It had crawled under his fence and come in through the doggy door, LOL!

I'm sorry about Beaver and your allergies.

We have had a couple dogs break into our backyard and a cat came in the front door today. Always funny when we get a visitor because my dogs go crazy.

Aw he sound like such a sweet dog. If there was foul play I think your parents were wise in their choice parent tales. We all have asthma so I can relate. Who's dog is in the pic?

Three breakins seems like a lot. They really like your house.

Best dog name ever! We had a dog when I was an infant, a pure bred dachsund (sp?!) until our messed up neighbors son poisoned him with some ground beef - my parents couldn't get over the loss so we never had another dog - until I got married and got one at age 32!

Nae,

Best. Dog. Ever. Beaver had more personality than any dog I've ever met before or after. Even so, I just want you to know that I would never choose Beaver over you... uh... well... not in my adult life for sure! :P

It was pretty convenient that his disappearance happened while I was out of state visiting Aunt Jan. Mom's sticking to her story, though. Tenacious, that one. She would've made an awesome mafia boss.

Seriously, though, love you, Nae-Nae!
