Mother Daughter Moments

I love my seven-year-old daughter.  She's fun and smart and talented and a bit DRAMATIC.  So, when I got a call from her school a couple weeks ago, I was skeptical:

School Lady
Your daughter wants you to take her home.  She's sick.

Me
Does she actually seem sick?

School Lady
I'll let you talk to her.

Dani
Hi, Mommy.  I'm really sick. I need to go home.

Me
Are you sure?

Dani
Yes, I'm so sick.

Me
Where does it hurt?

Dani
Well, I have a headache.

Me
You have a headache? (She has a lot of headaches.)  Did something else happen at school that you're upset about?

Dani
No. I just don't feel good.  Also, my throat hurts.

Me
Uh-huh.  Well, I'm not really sure.  I--

Interrupting School Lady
Maam?

Me
I'll come in, but I can't right now.  I have to drop my other daughter off for kindergarten in half an hour and I'll check on her then.

I dropped Evie off and grudgingly lugged Dax and Mase inside.  Dani was lying in the nurses room, sound asleep.  I felt her head and neck.  She was burning up!  Oh no.  I am the worst mom!

It turns out my daughter had the stomach flu.  Thankfully, it only lasted a little over a day.  As a reward for my initial lack of empathy, Dani gave me a gift.  I came down with the same headache/stomach flu a few days later and even had a relapse just last week.  Lesson learned!

As a bonus, I thought I'd share an additional mother/daughter moment from this past Saturday.

Dani
Mom!  You look pregnant.

Me
I'm not.

Dani
But you look pregnant.

Me
Dani, you really shouldn't say that to people.  It's not nice.

Dani
I would never say that to people.  Just to you.

(Awww.  I'm special.)

There is always that fine line between reacting too quickly to complaints and not reacting quickly enough.

I brought my 8 year old to school with me this morning complaining of a headache and stomach ache. I am holding my breath that his day doesn't turn out like your daughter's.

You always make me smile with your blog. She is so sweet..... My Kait isn't that nice about it.... She says mom how many calories are in that? Me: Why? Kait: Because you are starting to look fat, and I think you should go on a diet. Aren't kids so nice to us?!? Only I'm not special she has called others fat too.... One of those "oh no" moments.

Lol, the pregnant thing I had to laugh about. Because I'm pregnant, my daughter who is 4 feels the need to ask everyone (male or female) if they are pregnant if they have a little bit of a belly.

Oh my gosh. Well, as a kid who cried wolf all of the time, my mom seldom believed me either. That's until I threw up and had diarrhea in my Sunday school class. (I was 4 or 5.) She never doubted me again.

Pregnant? I'm sure you don't look it even if your daughter thinks so. So glad she reserves that compliment for you :-) Too funny.

Bummer she was sick! Although it's not like we all haven't a) faked being sick and b) didn't get our kids when we should have. I haven't had to get Marlee from school, but there have been times that it was probably time to go to the doctor, but I wasn't sure so I didn't take her, until a week later when she was STILL sick. It happens. They live through it. And we get to feel guilty. Isn't that what being a mom is all about. LOL

As for the pregnant part...that cracks me up! Only because before I was even showing at all, my niece said the same thing to me. I think I was like 7 or 8 weeks. Little stinkers. :)

I think it's always a 50 - 50 on whether or not they are really sick. I always feel guilty the other 50% when I don't react quickly enough, but I figure my son needs something to hold over my head during those teenage years so i might as well start now.

Don't you just love their ummm perspective!? I had a similar bad mom moment... And I wasn't home, I was back in wi when mine got sick....with pneumonia!! And flu....we all are thru now....I hope!!! Hope all of you are well now!!

Well kids do sometimes try to trick us with the sick thing so you shouldn't feel too bad. You got there pretty quickly anyhow, and she was under the nurse's care, right? Besides, she got you back with the pregnant comment. ;)

yep, been there. and my boy likes to time his projectile vomit for when all the kids are sitting at the lunch table. twice.
they must think I am the worst parent ever. and that I just leave him there so they can deal with the clean up. which honestly, is a nice little bonus for me.
Hope everyone is feeling better soon!

sorry your daughter wasn't feeling well. when my daughter was her age she used to call me from school all the time. once i got a phone call from her teacher asking if i was missing a check, because my then 8 yr old wrote a $50 check to her school to donate money to the Heart Foundation! she told me later when she got home that, whoever donated the most money would win a nice prize. i guess she really wanted to win!!

Well I do not think it was unresonable to wait half an hour when you already had to go there to drop off your other child for Kindergarten. What I do think is unresonable though is that a nurse did not bother to take a temp and then tell you that she had a fever. I mean that is just a basic reaction. Or hey even to feel her head and say "she does feel warm" to which you would have likely reacted differently.

I have one daughter who is constantly telling me that I am fat. :/ lovely child that she is shes only 8 and man alive does she try my patience.

We have all been there! My daughter is 16 and I still deal with the "I am sick, I don't want to go" thing...

Maybe you should read the "Cry Wolf" story to her. My oldest son went for a whole week with a broken arm because we thought he was faking. Moms aren't perfect and neither are school nurses.

I have been there when you weren't sure if your child is really sick. My son didn't have the opportunity to tell his teachers, he waited until drop off when we were in the school lobby to leave "evidence" all over the floor and everything else within 10 ft. Needless to say, I took him back home.....Not my proudest mom moment.

Sometimes it is hard to tell if they are really sick, or just trying to get out of school! (Or whatever other responsibility they don't like!) But if your kids like school.... :)

Too bad, though that she (and you!!) got sick. That is no fun.

And that pregnant comment?! So hilarious! :D Thanks for sharing! Reading your posts always makes my day.

Blessings,
Mikailah

I probably would have done the same thing with the sickness....still couldn't the nurse have said "she feels really hot" or something. My kids have said "you look like you have a baby in your tummy" to me all the time. I say "no I look like I USED to have a baby in my stomach". AND IT NEVER GOES AWAY! :)

Oh my gosh I love that! My niece asked me if I were prego a few months after I gave birth, and I wan't too happy. Then she told me it looked like I had a baby in my tummy because it was still so puffy :) Gotta love kids!

Oh boy. Have we not as moms all been in your shoes? It can be so hard to know if they really are sick or not! Especially after they have faked it before. I will never forget my, "I'm the worst mom in the world moment" of a sick kid. Mine said he was sick, but I didn't believe him so I made him go to school. I got a call an hour later to tell me he threw up all over the bus! I was SO embarrassed! :) Good thing there are a lot of us in that club!

I'm sorry you got sick too... I hope you are feeling better now!

That would so be me, to not believe my child was really sick.

Last spring, my other two had fevers and I was taking them to the doc. Oldest insisted he was sick, too. I didn't believe him but figured I might as well take him along. Yup, he had strep.

last summer my step-daughter told me I should wear some shirt. I asked her why and she told me I was too fat for it. Her dad told me He thought it was b/c her mom never wears anything like that so she's not used to seeing one. It was a tube top so I didn't get tan lines before my wedding. ha! They kind of have to be a little tighter so they don't fall down :) Might I add she was 7 at the time (now 8) so it might be that age group :)

I hope you are all feeling better. What a silly girl, saying that to you! I'm the same way with Froggy--she whines and fusses so much that I always doubt that she's actually feeling bad, but then when she spikes a fever I feel awful about it.

At September 26, 2011 at 12:39 PM , Blogger BNM said...

its hard to determine when they are faking it or not. I had this happen to me a few weeks ago my son kept telling me his throat hurt but something always hurts in the mornings while getting ready for school. However, when he got out of school that day he said the same thing and I took him to the doc and the poor thing had strep :( I remember my mom not coming and getting me when I was sick but I dont hate her for it now lol I faked it more often than not.

I would totally do the same thing with my kids- the questioning and lack of empathy. In fact I did just that last week with my daughter-she was at home though-- and then when she threw up I realized her stomach really did hurt.

And yea- after several people-not just my kids asked if I was pregnant I knew it was time to really get serious.

I have a mellow dramatic son who loves to exagerate how he feels so I know how you feel. Trust me the school nurse should be used it and should have taken her temp and called you back if she had a fever!

You're not a bad mom; we've all done it. Especially at that age. That seems to be "the" age when they realize that calling home sick will get them out of school. And yeah, isn't lovely how they "share" their germs?

Minutes after I finished reading this, the little one woke up. He didn't say it, but I knew he was sick. A few minutes after that his sister woke up complaining that she was sick. I don't know... I did give her some medicine just in case, but I sent her to school anyway cause I'm just not convinced :)

My kids would NEVER tell me I looked pregnant! In fact, my daughter told me she thought I was pretty! And then added, "like an elephant." What?!? And then my son's FRIEND told me I looked like I was pregnant. yep. I think I'll be cutting back too.

Annabelle likes to come up to me and pat my stomach and say, "Mom your big tummy is so cute. Then she'll try to lift my shirt and raspberry me or touch my belly button which I hate!

I swear I've done the same thing when I got a "sick" call from school!

Awww! That's probably happened to all of us. Hope you are feeling better. And nice that you're "special"! Gotta love honest kids.

The first conversation reminded me of many conversations I had with my own children. I rolled my eyes and I always hoped that they were not sick. It usually happened when we were getting ready for school and we were running late. Ugh You are not the first and you certainly are not the last. Rite of passage to every parent!

Oh, don't feel so bad. My seven year old son still calls me on a regular basis from school saying he's "sick". More often than not, he's fine. I recently ignored his complaints of an earache because it only seemed to be a problem at bedtime. Finally, I gave in to his consistent whining and took him to the doctor. Turns out he had a really, really nasty ear infection. I felt like the worst mother ever! Sometimes you just don't know with these darn kids!

So funny! In the shower my 3 year old said, "Mommy your tummy is fat, maybe you have a baby in there." She is really hoping! I told her we don't say fat, that it isn't a nice word. So then she said, "Ok, your tummy is chubby."

This is so funny! Reading your blog makes me feel like I'm not alone in the trials and adventures and mistakes and funny things that are involved with motherhood and children!
P.S. Thanks for letting me know that my blog was updating in your feed. You have provided me with hope that this problem may not be as bad as I fear! :)

It's so funny/scary things little kids say.... that worries me for our future :)
Hate that y'all were sick. I had it too and it blew!

I can't believe she said that! Oy! My daughter is learning to talk and she is already such a little sassy pants, that I have no doubt I will hear similar stuff. Also, I'm sorry you guys had the flu! I HATE the flu! That's the one time I turn into a whiny brat. I hope you're feeling well now!

So funny! My 7-year-old will sometimes preface something nice like that with "I don't want to hurt your feelings, but...your hair doesn't look very good today. But I don't want to hurt your feelings."

And I have a strong memory of my oldest having a similar stomach flu experience - she liked being sick and missing school a little too much, so I was often a little skeptical that she actually needed to be picked up. One afternoon I picked her up even though I doubted her, and she threw up all over me as soon as we got home. Lesson learned. Sometimes (still only sometimes) I should believe them if they say they're sick :)

I've been the skeptical mom too. My four year old already tells some pretty good tales. But it's awful when you're wrong and they really are sick. BTW-I love the name Dax. IF there's a baby #3 in our future, it's on the list.

My daughter just turned seven and has been complaining of headaches a lot lately as well. :( This is a funny post, however, and resonates with a lot of us (judging by the comments!). I just always have to think to myself, "Oh well, I am never going to be THAT MOM (you know, the one who has it all together and does everything right!)." I've made peace with it. :)

You'll have to call her The Girl Who Barfed Wolf from now on: )
And don't feel too bad- I've done it too.

I have two daughters and I love our talks and special moments.... One time when my oldest was about 4 or 5 - I was getting out of the shower (no privacy) and she asked me why I was fat... geez - what a way to start my day... ha

The only thing worse than going in to pick up a "sick" child who turns out to be well is to call their bluff (which turns out not to be a bluff at all).

What a crack up - I distrust my kid's "illnesses" all the time and I love the pregant conversation. That sounds just like something that would happen at my house.

It sounds like she keeps you on your toes. My 4 year old is just a wee bit dramatic too!

Remember a few years ago when short dresses over a pair of jeans was an "in" look? Well, I tried it, and my daughter said, "Mom, you look pregnant!" I never wore jeans and a dress at the same time again.

My personal favorite? When my twins put their hands on my mama gut and pat it. Um. No. Sigh.

Love reading your blog, never have time to comment, so I'm up at an ungodly hour, commenting, lol.
