Family Treasure Hunt

Have you done this before!?!  Geocaching.  I had read several blog posts about this and decided my family had to go!  After a long day at work, my husband took some convincing, but I am a smooth salesperson and he couldn't refuse!

There are over a million different geocaches or "treasures" hidden all over the world.  Once you sign up on their website, you can see just how many are near you.

Then download the app and use your GPS to find the hidden gems.  Sometimes there are even photos or hints to help you out.  If you want to keep your geocache, you need to replace the item or items with a treasure of your own.  Surprisingly, there were a bunch, just minutes from my house!

Our first adventure led us to a nearby park.
We searched...and searched, then gave up. Uhg!

On to the next crusade.  This one was dangerous as it was on the side of a busy road.   We searched...and searched.  Suddenly!  Evie was sure she found the geocache and wanted to show me...snail shells.  Drat!

Maybe we were not meant to be treasure hunters, but we forged ahead to yet another geocache.  The destination had a brutal terrain.
Once again, we searched...and searched, for at least half an hour.  Still!  Nothing!  It was getting dark, but I was undaunted and wanted to look for just one more.

My husband was so not impressed with my geocaching idea at this point and insisted we go home. But, I explained, "Lucky for you, this last one is on our way home."  It was...sort of.  He stayed in the car with the baby.

I was excited because our final treasure hunt was a special geocache, just for kids.  We searched...and searched, and finally....under the dog poop collector...success!   My 7-year-old was the one to find it.  You would think she would be jumping for joy.  Not exactly.

"I found it!  It's all MIIIIINE!"

The above photo was taken after I threatened eternal room doomation to my daughter and yanked the jar out of her tightly gripped fingers.

Ah the joys of family togetherness.

Grumpy Grateful Mom Goal of the Day:  Convince my husband to go geocaching again.

This was, unfortunately, NOT a paid review for geocaching.  But, because I know you are all dying to go now, here is their link.

our stash

This is a late addition to my post:  We did replace the geocache with some very cool Happy Meal toys.

lol! OMG, so my mother-in-law is way into geocaching. We went on a few hunts with her or my sister-in-law. And every time we go, something bad happens to me. I like the idea, but hate it. I refuse to go now. And we haven't gone in a very long time.

Glad you guys had some fun. It's a great way to go and explore new parts of your area. Or just be together as a family. Good luck on your next hunt! Oh, and it's super fun to see who has been there. I think you can look up user handles and see where they are from. It's kind of cool!

Glad you got to walk away with something for your troubles! Yeah after 2 fails I'm sure my family would've been done! Fun to do something new though!

I'm so embarrassed. I confess we got Pierce a geomate jr. for his birthday LAST October and haven't used it once yet! And it does look like so much fun - I know he'd enjoy it.

Love the stash!

Perhaps I live under a rock, but I've NEVER heard of this! What a fun idea! :) I'm not sure my hubby would love it either, but I know my 5 year old son would! :)

What very special treasures you found! ;)

We just finished the Geocaching Merit Badge for my son. Look for the one by NatetheScout. It's at a nearby park and it's a fun and easy find. Look for Grandma's Fruit Basket (or something similar) it's fun too but take something to trade. We love geocaching!

I have never heard of this before. Not sure if it's done in Canada but I'll be checking. Our family plays what we call "Treasure". It's been happening since Easter and is basically an easter egg hunt but with toys and it's a game that unfortunately never tires with my oldest so he'd be sure to love geocaching! Dare I introduce it?

Oh I was so in love with idea. We did this last summer and I could never find anything. I would try even the ones marked easy and never find a thing!! The kids would be like no more!! Finally the hubs came with us and he find one on his first try! I was none to happy and he teased me about for awhile :) But him and my daughter found one in a park by our house. It is fun when you find something. The app on the iPhone is fun to use with too.

Perhaps I've been living under that rock too!! I had never heard of this...wonder if they do it here in Australia? Sounds right up our alley, lol. Until we don't find anything then it would be game over :)

Cute. I love it. My kinda adventure. My dad sets up geocashing "whatever you call thems" for people in his church...they do an annual contest. But...he makes them hike up a mountain to find them. He he...he LOVES to make it really hard. :) Sadly I live in another state and have never gotten to do his set ups (or whatever you would call it),. Huh! Anyway...sounds fun!

See I just got stuck on the whole GPS thing .... I decided today that it's not a luxury - it's a NECESSITY! So do you think you could help me to get Doc to feel guilty enough about Thurs that he'll get me a GPS?

I have never heard of this. Glad you all were able to find something. I often make treasure hunts for the kids and leave clues all over the house. They enjoy that so much!

I've heard about this. I'm not sure if I'd have the patience to search. I'd give up halfway through and go out for a milkshake.

Yay for finding stuff though! If people were burying money, I'd be all about that.

Oh my gosh! I would sooooo love to do this! We don't own a GPS though. I know a lot of my friends on Facebook have done it before. So, did you guys leave something in it's place?

Our city just hosted a geocaching search for local teens a few weeks ago! I've never heard so much about this until now. If I mentioned this to my hubs I'm sure he'd be so ready to go! I'm gonna check it out for sure!

I think we have something similar in our neck of the woods called Letterboxing. I think my older boys would love it! We are just waiting for the baby to get more sure-footed and then we will be off! SO COOL! Like a pirates treasure hunt..at least that is what I will tell my boys to get them interested, and keep them interested!

I have heard of this before. MY sister-in-law has done this several times and loves it. What a great idea to do with kids, even if you're hubby wasn't thrilled with the idea.

The kids looked like they had a great time!
Will check out the site. I'm curious.

I have always wanted to check into this to see what its all about. I think I might be a little let down b/c I'm a snob I'm learning that all I got was a lil' trinket.. but its the idea of the hunt, right? and more for the kids. I want to find a full on treasure chest full of awesome jewelry or something! Wouldn't that be neat!! Or MONEY!! haha!! Very fun idea..
