Dance Competition Hair Debacle

Some moms are cut out for the big leagues.  I am not.

I took my daughter (now 7) out of gymnastics and put her in dance this year.  It seemed like a great choice.  The studio was in my neighborhood and the price was not too pricey.

She had her first of two yearly competitions this weekend.  Much to my detail incompetent dismay, the directions for hair styling were quite specific, but, apparently, not specific enough.  Here is a small portion:

Please put bangs in a front small poof, with crossed bobby pins to secure it.  My daughter does not have bangs, so I just thought I would put all her hair back in the required pony tail and skip the poof. We attempted the poofless style at dress rehearsal.  I was then sent a charming email informing me, "it is not a matter of short or long bangs, all girls need to have 100% matching hairstyles." Whoops.
My daughter's hair (post-poof)
Then, the directions precisely stated, rhinestone ponytail holder is required to be worn over hair elastic, at all performances.  How was I to know I needed to pre-order the ponytail holder.  I just assumed it came with the costume.

When my daughter mentioned that everyone got a holder, except her, I inquired about it.  I was then told I should have noticed the rhinestone holder in the order form they sent home (that I threw away) and now needed to look for one myself.  It's possible I was just a bit unhelpfully snappy back.

After calling and searching online for close to an hour, I finally found an exact match.  The price was $16 for 1 holder, but only $4, per holder, if I bought 12.  That's right.  I   I bought 12.  Guess what all of my daughter's friends will be getting for their birthdays?  A cheap purse with a lovely rhinestone ponytail holder.

Finally, as if to foil me again, an additional detail was added.  My daughter brought home a sparkly hair flower the week before the competition.  We were also given a checkoff list, specifically reminding us to remember all hair accessories.  I was focused.  I had the hairspray, gel, bobby pins, elastics, and I brought 3 rhinestone ponytail holders, just in case.  But, sadly, when it was time to preform, the flower was still at my house. I will not go into the aftermath of this mistake, as it would be too traumatic to recount.

Maybe I should put my daughter in something that is easier for me, knitting perhaps.

Grumpy Mom Goal of the Day:  I will try to have a better attitude about the details of dance.

Details, Details, Details...man they are 7! I would have gone mad! LOL...But I guess now you know the drill and can prepare "better" for next time. How did they do in the competition?

Wow, that seems SO specific for a 7 year olds dance competition! I don't think I'm ready for all of that! :)

Note to self: If blessed with daughters in the future, push towards sports, sewing, cooking...anything but dance! This post gave me nightmares

Ok, totally would just drop this. YIKES! I get that they have to match, but really?
You are a better mom than me if you stick this out. But then again my girl is only 4. :D

Ha....hats off to you for trying! My friends little girl is in dance and I am floored by the amount of time and $$ it takes for competitions. She came home with a diagram of how to apply the $80 worth of Mary Kay cosmetics that they had to buy...yikes! My daughter will be staying in the rec league for gymnastics!

I have to add this. It was my choice put her on a competitive dance team. I thought it would be a good choice for my girl. There was the option to just take a dance class and not compete.

Despite all of my issues, my daughter is a ham and LOVES to perform. She had a blast at the competition and a great time with all of her friends.

In the end, every girl received a small trophy and their team won a ruby, which (I think) meant they got second in their division.

Wow! Who knew? I sure didn't! So glad she had fun and did well. At least you will be ready next time! I think I am glad my daughters didn't want to do dance now! lol

Ohhhh this would happen to me! I am forever forgetting all the millions of details and quite frankly they drive me nuts. Simplicity is the key to a happy life. ;)

I always wanted a girl. I think I'm glad I have boys. Despite the horrid Spider Man, batman, iron man junk....despite being the ONLY female in this house. Ok, ok, ONE little girl would have been nice....but we're not looking back. Not now that we're finally forever out of diapers!!!

Died laughing at your post! I danced competitively for YEARS and taught dance fore YEARS!! Everyone has to look exactly the same. :-) If you ever have a dance costume/hair question pop me an email!! We used to have to all buy the exact same make up to wear at recitals and competitions. :-)

Haha Not to self: If I have a daughter, do not enter her in competitive dancing. I'm sure I would have botched the whole thing up way worse than you. I don't even know if I'd be able to make a poof if I did remember it. Did they have specific make-up requirements too...because at that point, I'm pretty sure I would have had to hire a professional. :/

I have limited patience with direction following that is so extreme. I grumble about buying the right color socks for my sons' baseball team.

Perhaps there is a touch of "Toddler and Tiara" syndrome going on?

My kids don't dance or do gymnastics. I would lose my mind if I had to do all of that. Soccer and softball are more our style. You just get sweaty and dirty and you don't have to be cute. Oh, and they also have my coordination, so they'd probably be kick off of any dance team! Heather

Great post! I deal daily with lack of advanced notice/limited details from our studio owner!

In fact, I just started a blog, SnarkyintheStudio.com, where I snarkily share my pointe of view as a Dance Mom. I'd love to know what you think!
