A Fond Farewell to Kid Phases!

My toddler bit me this week!  I was shocked!  It had been months since his last bite.  I  quickly put the culprit in his crib.  He screamed, appalled by his punishment!

I got my screaming biting boy out a couple of minutes later and sternly told him, "We don't bite." This was immediately followed by sweet "love yous" and cuddles.

As you would expect, he spent the entire night opening his mouth pretending he was going to bite me, then busting up with a giggle when I gave him my ultimate mommy glare.  Cute, but dangerous!

This incident has me pondering:

When exactly did his initial biting phase end?  Why didn't I take the time to appreciate such a celebratory event?  Maybe I deserve the return of the biting phase.  I will definitely throw a gratitude party when it is gone for the second time. What other phase-endings have I forgotten to celebrate!

So today,  here's just a sampling of:

Kid Phases I Won't Miss!

Potty Accidents
OK, they're not gone, but we've made huge progress!  Potty training my three-year-old seemed to go on forever, but I can finally see the light!

Sickness, More Sickness, Resickness
You know how one person in the family gets sick and then another and then someone gets resick and it goes on and on and on and you spend months stuck at home!  We're all relatively healthy... for today.   Yee-haw!

Picking
I don't even want to talk about it for fear of jinxing myself, but I'm jumping up and down on this one.

Having a Diaper-Whipper-Offer
I've only had one kid develop a love for whipping it off, but it's enough bad memories to last a lifetime.

Drooling and Reflux
Dani wore bibs until age 4, just to catch the drool!  Most currently, Dax just finished a terrible reflux phase a few months ago.  Woo-hoo!

The Choking Fear
My 18-month-old still attempts to eat, most recently, toothpaste, dirt, lemon-pepper seasoning, and shampoo, but has finally slowed down on putting all chokable things in his mouth.  I can breath again!

Constantly Crying Baby
When my first daughter was born I expected a few tears, but that's not what I got.   She cried continuously!  That was a while ago, yet I could still give a big HOORAH every day I'm not in that phase.   Now she's moved on to more mature drama. "You're sooo meeeeean!!!"

Today I'm celebrating the hiatus of these small challenges.   It's amazing to look back and see so many wonderful times interwoven with the frustrations.  I'm sure I'll fondly remember some of my current phases too...when my children are grown!

Grumpy Grateful Mom Goal:  Enjoying my eventful time as a mother.

 My girls, the early years.

We are just starting the potty phase and soon will begin the cycle all over again! I'm glad to know there is life after toddlerhood!

I absolutely LOVE that picture. FYI Dani looks exactly the same lol. Britt thought it was fun to see a picture of Evie so little.... not that she is much bigger now ;)

I've got quite a ways to go...we are still going through ALL those phases above :) Like you, I'm sure I will remember these fondly...when they are grown!

Oh no! Biting is a bad phase! We are about to enter into the potty training phase...not looking forward to that one!

Cute picture! How about the mommy can't sleep because she worries too much at night phase. Does that one EVER end? :)

Strangely I've never went through the biting phase......but I've been through the crying, falling out, picking (this hasn't ended) and wetting or hiding in corners to take a number 2.

You're right, it's so important to remember that with children almost everything is a phase and whether it's a good habit or a not-so-good-one, it deserves recognition and gratitude. Well, gratitude most of the time anyway! :)

I'll add one:
Sippy Cups.
Their lids.
Their discoloration.
Finding them all over the house.
With milk still inside...curdle, of course.
I'm done.

Pierce had reflux so bad until he was 3 that not only was he on multiple meds 3x a day, but we would layer bibs on him when we went out so we could just whip them off as they were puked on. It was awful.

I currently have a diaper whipper myself. Little stinker.

We'll be potty training next week. It's about time. He's 3.5 years old!

My two year old has taken to pulling his peep up so it's pointing either straight up, or peeking out of his diaper. If I don't catch it, he pees all over the floor. How do you stop that??????

I'm pretty much still in all those stages (and a few more)... So you're telling me there really is light at the end of the tunnel? I heard (and can testify) that you just start over with the grandkids when you finish your own.

I'm so with you on all of it!!!! I'd also like to add, the beatingthecrapoutofeachother phase. When does that stop??? Love your new look, by the way, I've been MIA but checking in every now and then!

My sister just called me saying that my niece is finally fully potty-trained. I bet she's feeling your relief right now!

The one still coming is the "little goat" phase, when they are old enough to really accumulate body order, and getting them to bathe and brush teeth, etc. is a real challenge. There were a number of years my husband and I lovingly referred to our girls as "our little goats":)

my daughter is 7 and redoing the naked phase...thankfully she only insists upon it at bedtime and can be talked out of it the rest of the time!

I am so glad to be past the choking phase. My youngest used to choke all the time and it was so scary. Picking is the next one I want to pass.

We are still in several of these phases, someday....Someday we will miss these phases, when they are in the other not so nice phases like when they are teenagers.

The choking phase scares me to death. My youngest puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. I can't wait until that's over.

OMG...I hope the potty stage ends for me soon!!! I love the pics of your girls. Love the look on your older one's face...she's coming up with some more stages to surprise you with, I think! Waaay too smart!

It's been a few years since I have even had to think of all the diaper phases, they were so much fun!! I thankfully did not have a choker, but I did (and I'm going to go out on a limb with this one by using the past tense) have a hitter and a head banger!! Not fun, but somewhat funny but only becasue he was my third. Not at all funny if it had been my first!! Thanks again for another great post!! I love the way you write!! You are so talented!!!

I always forget that babies drool until someone (like you) reminds me of that, but that phase was pretty horrendous now that I recall.

I never had a diaper whipper-offer...THANK GOODNESS!

We are in the cry/scream all day long phase. It's fun! Not.

My oldest cried nonstop too. So hard. 9 months - I thought I was losing my mind. Actually I might have, but I think I got it back eventually.

Sickness - OMG my youngest was sick ALL FALL last year - like missing upwards of 15 days of school. SO praying that doesn't happen again this year.

I love the new bog design! Sorry, it's been a while since I visited. Beautiful layout. I love it!

As for the kid phases you listed, I don't miss them either.

I hate the tantrums though. We still occasionally have those.

The kids phases seem to be never-ending! I'm finding the four-year-old phase harder, much harder, than the three and two year old phases. And now my two-year-old is potty training and loves to take off her diaper containing poop and run all around the house as I chase her (yes, we have a ways to go with the training), but it all seems like it will never end. Then again, I know some great things may end too, like all of the cuddles and affectionate kisses and random "I love you Mama" comments.

Sniff, sniff. I'm still in most of those phases. Thanks for rubbing it in. :(

Just kidding. Way to go sista'. You have made it through...now...onto boys and dates and all that "bad" stuff that can go with it. he he he...

I'm thinking I might not miss these but then again I might when they're all grown up.....or not. I'm confused.

You already know about my bitting drama. Well, since last time we talked about it, she got flicked for it. We'll see if it happens again. But this can already go into the category 'things I don't miss'. And I'm really not liking this choking hazard phase either. Well, to think of it, I'm in the middle of ALL those thing you've mentioned. Oh crap.

Oh these phases seem so long when they are going on, but really do pass quickly in the grand scheme of things. I miss the baby days!!

Kenny still "picks" it's his bedtime routine. I gave up on stopping it. Hopefully he'll outgrow that one before he's interested in dating.
As for quiet moments, you are definitely still in the phase where you can't snag one, I'm sure. Things are easier now,as on vacation Daddy is all boy and boys need to be in motion. But Ryan now takes his own showers! Maybe that should have happened earlier but he wanted to on his own...yes!

I thought I was out of all of those phases. And then, lo and behold, I have a baby!

Since I've got along way to go on the others,
I'm looking foward to the end of the "talking back" phase.

Sometimes with all these things I just have to keep telling myself that they will eventually pass. I can't wait until I have a solid nights sleep without extra bodies in my bed, clean floors, and no screams. My youngest has just learned to scream - for fun or to get my attention. Maybe I should just walk around with earplugs for a few years. :)
